In my Build a Better Book series, I'm your guide to building the book you've always dreamed of.
Why good writing is a fallacy.
How essential is being a good writer to your story? I'm here to tell you it's not everything! Sure, it doesn't hurt to have some masterful linguistic skills, but you've got to remember that your story is more than the way you arrange your words. The thought you put into building your characters up will help propel your story and keep readers engaged the whole way through.
What if I never had good grades in English class growing up? DON'T let this stop you. I used to think the same thing. The truth is, so many great writers simply know how to connect to you, and the writing isn't all that important. Many famous writers throughout history did't have college degrees or A's on their high school papers. These artists knew how to make you care about the characters and hook you in for the long haul.
"Bad" writing is still writing.
This goes for all art mediums too. Famous artists like Frida Kahlo, and Jean-Michel Basquiat didn't have formal education in art-- but they had the ability to make you FEEL. When we emotionally connect to something it adds value to our lives, it teaches us something, we feel too. This is so much more important to adorning your page with gorgeous prose and even proper grammar.
So here it is.. here is your permission to break the rules and simply just do your best to connect to your audience. Whoever that may be. Be intentional and specific with your goals and remind yourself that even bad writing is still writing. Allowing yourself the freedom to make mistakes and still continue to write will be essential to completing your first book. Don't let all those good ideas go to waste--just write!
