Build a Better Book: Don't over-outline your story

You shouldn't overdo it on your outline if you want your story to flow

Your story is likely going to take a turn for the worst if you decide to stick to a strict outline. How do you make sure you still have structure though? Well outlining isn't all that bad, but y

our outline should be more like a loose-fitting guide than directions to an Ikea dresser. In other words don't be afraid to color outside the lines.

Structure can be good to make sure that you stay on track, but if you follow your outline so strictly, you could be making your characters flat, and your story just won't flow!

Your characters should have a mind of their own

The plot shouldn't dictate where your characters go next, and what they say. Your characters should be dictating the plot. This is why it's more important to outline your character arcs/internal conflict before you decide on plotline.

Character driven-stories make choices based on their misbeliefs/desires/fears. This drives the story forward, to reveal the beautiful journey of change your character takes on. The plot is just a bonus!

Deciding on the plot before the character can limit your choices and confine your characters to making specific actions, so that certain plot points can happen. You don't want this.
